Is Kim Kardashian Vegan? She Says She Goes “Off and On”
Not strictly. Kim Kardashian told Jimmy Kimmel this month that she goes "off and on" being vegan, which is why she skipped the burgers and nuggets on her habit of trying McDonald's in every country she visits and had fries in China instead. She has called herself flexitarian, eating mostly plant-based with treat days. That makes her one of the most honest celebrity examples out there, because it's how most people actually eat less meat. Here's what she eats, why she switched, and what her approach gets right.
What she's said about being vegan
Kardashian has been talking about plant-based eating for years, and her answer has been consistent: mostly, not always.
- "Exploring the plant-based lifestyle hardcore." That's how she described it to Plant Based News when she first started talking publicly about it.
- Psoriasis. On her sister Kourtney's lifestyle site, Poosh, she said a plant-based diet helps her control her psoriasis and has made her more aware of how food affects her mood, stress and energy. She said she does her best to stay as plant-based as possible, "unless it's a treat day."
- Beyond Meat. In 2022 she became Beyond Meat's "chief taste consultant" and starred in its ads (one of which got mocked online for what fans called "fake chewing").
- "Off and on." In her October 2026 Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance, she said she goes off and on of being a vegan, so she has a hard time eating the chicken nuggets and burgers abroad.
She's also reported to be dating Lewis Hamilton, who has been vegan since 2017. Our page on Lewis Hamilton's vegan diet covers what he eats.
What she eats
From what she's shared:
- Plant-based tacos, which she says she eats at least once a week. Vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free.
- Sea moss smoothies, which she drinks for their anti-inflammatory reputation.
- Lots of vegetables and plant protein day to day, with Beyond Meat products in the rotation.
- Treat days: pizza, and doughnuts when she wants something sweet.
None of it is complicated. That's the useful part.
Why "off and on" works better than you'd think
A lot of people hear "off and on vegan" and think it doesn't count. But look at our page on celebrities who quit being vegan: many of them went strictly vegan overnight, struggled, and went all the way back to eating meat. Going strict and then quitting usually means you end up eating more meat than someone who stayed mostly plant-based.
Kardashian's version skips that cycle. A few things it gets right:
It has a reason that isn't willpower. Her psoriasis gives her a reason she feels in her body. People who stay with eating less meat usually have a reason like that: health, animals, the planet. "I should" doesn't last; "I feel better" does.
It allows treat days on purpose. Planned exceptions are easier to keep than a rule you break by accident. If pizza on Friday is part of the plan, Friday isn't a failure.
It has a few default meals. Weekly tacos are her default. Most people who eat less meat long-term have three or four meals they make without thinking.
If you want a name for it, flexitarian is the honest one. Our guide to vegan vs vegetarian vs flexitarian explains the differences and which one fits which goal.
If you're trying it
The hard part of "mostly plant-based" isn't the meals. It's the moment a craving hits and your default is the burger. That's the bit to plan for:
- Pick three default meals you'd happily eat every week. Tacos are a good start.
- Decide your treat days in advance, so a craving on a Tuesday has an answer: "Saturday."
- Expect the craving to pass. Most last ten to twenty minutes. Our guide on why you crave meat explains what's going on.
That middle step is what the Spared app is for: you open it when the craving hits instead of the fridge or the delivery app, ride it out, and watch the cravings beaten, days and animals spared add up. For the slower route in, see going vegetarian without going cold turkey.
